The original line up met on June 21st, , at the Stonehenge Free Festival and their name arose from discussions of hypothetical cereal brands Malcolm Segments, Desmond Whisps, and Gordon Lumps are among the names that were considered.
In the s the band built a fan base on the festival circuit, becoming particularly associated with the Glastonbury Festival, and made a series of cassette releases, sold at gigs and via a fan club. Their first label release was "Pungent Effulgent" in , which was also re-released in the early s, packaged with "Strangeitude".
This was followed by "Erpland" , an album dedicated to Erp, a character which appears on many of the band's album artworks. The track Sploosh! What's revelatory about a good Ozrics live album is the fact that the band are able to evoke their otherworldly sound perfectly in a live context. If you'd only heard their studio albums, you'd think that such sounds couldn't be replicated live, when in fact it turns out the real problem they had to grapple with in their early years was producing an acceptable replication of their cosmic live jams in the studio.
The extra atmosphere and variation offered by the live context enriches the already well-honed compositions in question. On this set, Ed Wynne earns the MVP spot with some guitar heroics of a sort you wouldn't normally expect from the Tentacles, but which slots into their sound perfectly.
Review by patrickq Prog Reviewer. And while I've never been much of a fan of "jam bands," this group is pretty good. Since I've had and enjoyed this two-CD "best-of" set for more than ten years, you might think I'd search out more Ozric Tentacles. But I never have.
I guess at some point during the second disc, around "Vibuthi," I feel like I've heard all this band has to offer. I've liked it, mind you, but two CDs is about the perfect quantity. The songs are a good mix of energetic and mellow but never too mellow.
The drumming is strong, most songs have a solid bass line, and there is often a sequencer part, which together gave me the sense that this was more of an electronic-progressive act.
